State Rep. Joe Pavlov, R-Smiths Creek, last week voted in support of legislation to strengthen election integrity by protecting Michigan elections from foreign influence and increasing transparency surrounding election funding.
The legislation, House Bills 5197 and 5198, closes gaps in current law by banning foreign funding of ballot proposals and requiring individuals or organizations involved in election administration to disclose whether they receive foreign funding.
While federal law prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to political candidates and Super PACs, that prohibition does not apply to ballot measures. This loophole has left state and local initiatives vulnerable to outside influence with no connection to Michigan communities.
“This plan closes that door and ensures foreign money has no role in shaping Michigan law or rewriting our Constitution,” said Pavlov.
The bills take a commonsense step toward closing loopholes and reinforcing public confidence in Michigan’s election process.
“Protecting the integrity of our elections is not optional, it is a responsibility,” said Pavlov. “Michigan elections should be decided by Michigan voters, not foreign money or interests operating behind the scenes.”
The bill package now moves to the Michigan Senate for further consideration.
