State Rep. Luke Meerman issued the following statement after House Democrats in majority voted to pass Senate Bill 911, a continued attempt to raid the teacher retirement fund to bankroll non-essential special projects:
“Democrats aren’t thinking about the long-term implications of this vote. Pillaging public teacher’s retirement accounts to fund frivolous government expansions, and unnecessary programs, is unacceptable. And creates a mess for the next generation to clean-up.
“For years, Republicans prioritized paying down pension liabilities and putting Michigan on the path to stability. It is incredibly disheartening to watch it unravel.
“Interrupting scheduled debt payments to pay for other spending measures is a sign that spending has gotten out of hand and government has gotten too big. It’s flat out irresponsible to gamble with the retirement plans of our hardworking teachers.”
